Anxiety an be an uncomfortable emotion no matter how old you are, but for a kid whose prefrontal cortex is still developing it can feel downright scary. It can be hard for them to make sense of what they are feeling and why they are feeling it. It can be even harder for them to trust that they can handle the discomfort of it! But when parents offer the right combination of empathy and support, parents send the message that they believe the child can handle the discomfort and can do the scary thing. |
