Who I work with
I work with adults and teens who are looking for support and understanding in navigating:
I offer in-person session in NE Portland and online (tele-health) sessions for anyone in Oregon. |
Just a friendly reminder... |
I have an expertise in helping people cope with emotions and increase emotional regulation. An overwhelm of emotions may manifest in one of the following ways:
- Anxiety - spiraling thoughts, difficulty relaxing or often feeling irritable, trouble falling asleep, worries or fears that are hard to calm, discomfort in your body like you've had too much coffee (when you haven't) or not enough sleep (when you have), or frequent headaches or stomachaches
- Panic Attacks - a sudden rush of intense fear or discomfort, feeling a lack of control or like you are going crazy, heart palpitations, sweating. 1/4 to 1/3 of all people will experience at least 1 panic attack in their lifetime. They can feel terrifying when they happen and that fear can continue long after the panic attack ends
- Lack of motivation - this may be connected to one of the above (stress can be exhausting) or it's own struggle
- Lashing out at others - anger, frustration and/or tears that can feel confusing when they feel like they don't match the situation that caused them
- Sensitivity - experiencing big emotions, crying easily, being told you are 'too sensitive,' that you overreact or need to 'toughen up,' feeling that you are let down by others easily
Teens:
Whether you (or your teen) are experiencing behaviors within the 'normal' range of development or outside it, the teen years can be difficult for all involved! My goal is to work with you to help make sense of it all, and help find ways to lean into it and enjoy the journey.
Through my experience as a school counselor in a public school and as a therapist working with teens, I am familiar with the stressors that school can bring, particularly now as we (re)adjust to life after a pandemic. Anxiety and worry caused by homework, friendships, bullying, and time management seems to be increasing, but through mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), somatic practices and a little brain science we'll practice and create a toolbox of strategies to decrease that anxiety, understand emotions, and make space to allow for conscious choices instead of reacting in the moment.
